Backgammon is a game of skill that is played by two people with 15 checkers each on a board consisting of 24 spaces or points. The checkers are moved according to rolls of the dice. Each player tries to bring his own checkers home and bear them off before his opponent does, hitting and blocking the enemy checkers along the way.
Backgammon is one of the oldest classic board games with thousands of books having been written detailing the complex strategies involved. It is not as simple as merely moving the checkers according to the numbers on the dice, but requires a strong tactical approach in order to outwit your opponent.
The best tactical position for your counters at any point during the game is to have at least two counters on each point in your home box, thereby preventing your opponent from re-entering his counters should you hit him. This will provide you with full control of the game until your opponent can re-enter his counters, and will also prove beneficial in aiding the bearing off process.
